The Greenwood Rotary Club is located in Greenwood Arkansas and meets at the Means Wilkinson Community Center in Farmers Bank every Friday at noon.
CHEMICLE HOUSEHOLD WASTE COLLECTION DAY
GREENWOOD, AR, MAY 30TH: The Greenwood Rotary Club, in cooperation with the City of Greenwood and Eccopartners.org will host the City’s first chemical household waste collection day, Saturday, June 14th. Collection will begin at 8a.m. and continue until noon. The collection site will be behind the HB Stewart Arena (large parking lot north) Greenwood High School.
Greenwood residents will be able to bring unused hazardous materials from their homes: such as paints, cleaning supplies, pesticides, batteries, light bulbs and solvents to be disposed of in a proper ecological manner. The club will not be able to accept any waste from businesses, household computers or electronics or tires. General garbage, household appliances or trash will not be accepted either.
“Dale Alimena, District Director of the Sebastian County Regional Solid Waste Management District spoke to our club about Greenwood’s Recycling Center recently. He got us excited about our town’s efforts to be eco-friendly. So when we were looking for a community-wide project for the club, we were ready to get involved by volunteering to do the hazardous household waste collection. With the recent city-wide cleanup, the on-going recycling center and now the hazardous household waste collection day, our residents will have every opportunity to be responsible eco-citizens,” said Theresa Burtchett, Rotary Publicity Chair.
The hazardous materials will be collected, sorted and properly stored under the supervision of Haz-M.E.R.T. Inc. at the direction of ecco-partners and the City of Greenwood. David Horton, of Haz-M.E.R.T. explained there will also be a “reuse area” where good and clean solvents, paints etc. can be picked up free of charge by residents.
Horton emphasized that a lot of people have half-full good cans of paints, pesticides or cleaning items that they no longer have a use for. But there might be someone who could use those things. Haz-M.E.R.T. would rather see things used then thrown away he said.
“We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this program. Thanks to the city, Greenwood School District and ecco-partners it is possible for the Rotary Club to be involved in this project. In addition MSG Waste will be helping by donating bins for the emptied containers which will be taken to the landfill. This is another example of how we can all do just a little thing to make a big difference. We want to do our part to make sure these items don’t end up in our streams and or community sewer system” explained Burtchett.
